Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply referred to as Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Escape the urban bustle at Point Lobos State Reserve and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Carmel City Beach/Carmel River Beach and Pfeiffer State Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Big Sur (Partington Cove & McWay Falls). There's much more to do: explore the activities along Monterey Bay, pause for some serene contemplation at San Carlos Cathedral, and get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour.
