Divided into neighborhoods with distinct characters and cultural heritages, San Diego sits just north of the Mexican border and offers visitors a blend of tourist attractions, including a lively nightlife, diverse cuisine, and a thriving musical scene.
Get out of town with these interesting San Diego side-trips: Self-Realization Fellowship Hermitage (in Encinitas) and LEGOLAND California (in Carlsbad). Pack the 20th (Wed) with family-friendly diversions at SeaWorld San Diego. There's lots more to do: stroll through San Diego Zoo, let the kids burn off some steam at Balboa Park, kick back and relax at Mission Beach Park, and trek along Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

Surrounded by mountain ranges, forests, valleys, beaches, and deserts, the metropolitan area of Los Angeles is home to over 17 million people.
Change things up with these side-trips from Los Angeles: Anaheim (Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, & more). Pack the 28th (Thu) with family-friendly diversions at Universal Studios Hollywood. The City of Monterey in Monterey County is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, on Central California's Pacific coast in California. Get out of town with these interesting Monterey side-trips: Natural Bridges State Beach (in Santa Cruz), Big Sur (Pfeiffer State Beach & Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park) and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (in Felton). There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Point Lobos State Reserve, admire the majestic nature at Asilomar State Beach, appreciate the extensive heritage of Pacific Grove Oceanview Boulevard, and pause for some serene contemplation at San Carlos Cathedral.

You can fly from Los Angeles to Monterey in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Los Angeles in January, things will get slightly colder in Monterey: highs are around 63°F and lows about 43°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Wed) early enough to drive to Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite National Park

Massive granite mountains, towering waterfalls, groves of Giant Sequoia trees, and wilderness as far as the eye can see distinguish the landscape of Yosemite National Park.

Getting from Monterey to Yosemite National Park by car takes about 5 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and taxi. When traveling from Monterey in January, plan for a bit cooler days in Yosemite National Park, with highs around 45°F, while nights are cooler with lows around 13°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 21st (Sun) early enough to go by car to San Francisco.
