Start off your visit on the 7th (Sun): examine the collection at Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum and then snap pictures at Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Step out of the city life by going to Horseback Riding Tours and Purgatory Resort. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Animas River Trail and Treasure Falls. Venture out of the city with trips to Pagosa Springs (San Juan River Walk & The Springs Resort & Spa), North Clear Creek Falls (in Creede) and Aztec Ruins National Monument (in Aztec). The adventure continues: cruise along Million Dollar Highway, admire the masterpieces at Earthen Vessel Gallery, and look for gifts at Animas Chocolate Company.

Traveling by car from Mesa Verde National Park to Durango takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and bus; or do a combination of taxi and shuttle. Expect a daytime high around 86°F in July, and nighttime lows around 54°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 20th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
