When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
On the 18th (Sun), take in the dramatic natural features at Morro Rock, look for gifts at Shell Shop Inc, and then kick back and relax at Moonstone Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: identify plant and animal life at Elephant Seal Rookery and then explore the historical opulence of Friends of Hearst Castle.

Traveling by car from Los Angeles to San Simeon takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of train and bus. Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply referred to as Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Point Lobos State Reserve and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Carmel: Big Sur (Pfeiffer State Beach & McWay Falls). There's lots more to do: stroll through Carmel City Beach/Carmel River Beach, take in the views from Bixby Bridge, cruise along Seventeen Mile Drive, and make a trip to San Carlos Cathedral.
