When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Wed): kick back and relax at Moonstone Beach, then stop by Sebastian General Store, then do a tasting at Hearst Ranch Winery Tasting Room, and finally step into the grandiose world of Friends of Hearst Castle. Keep things going the next day: enjoy the sea views from Piedras Blancas Light Station and then identify plant and animal life at Elephant Seal Rookery.
