When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Step off the beaten path and head to Elephant Seal Rookery and Moonstone Beach. You'll get in some beach time at Piedras Blancas and William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach. When in San Simeon, make a side trip to see Morro Rock in Morro Bay, approximately 38 minutes away. There's lots more to do: visit a coastal fixture at Piedras Blancas Light Station, stroll the grounds of Cambria Cemetery, and examine the collection at Coastal Discovery Center at San Simeon Bay (Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary).

Take a break from the city and head to Point Lobos State Reserve and Pfeiffer State Beach. Relax by the water at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Asilomar State Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Carmel side-trips: Big Sur (McWay Falls & Partington Cove).
