Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo

4.8
Hike, fish, and boat in the idyllic setting of Devil's Lake State Park. The lake was uncovered when a glacier retreated many years ago. Walk up the quartzite bluffs surrounding the water and enjoy the view. Head to the nature center to learn about the history of the park and see displays of rocks and artifacts. You'll camp in the conifer forest of the Baraboo Hills. Campsites feature restrooms, and snacks and basic necessities are available at the Ice Age campground. You can rent a boat by the lake and pick up tackle, poles, and camping gear at the stores on the north and south end of the park. The proceeds from the stores go toward maintaining the park. • One of the most beautiful parks in Wisconsin. Also one of the busiest. I find it the best in winter. You can hike, cross country ski, and snow shoe with out being crowded. Bluff hikes provide great views. Great lake for kayaking and canoe. Nice small beach. The shop in the beach will even sell you a beer if you forgot yours.
  • The hike around the lake was beautiful and just the right amount of time (took us about 2 1/2 hours). The hike wasn't too strenuous but be aware that you do gain elevation, and thus have to go down too. Plenty of spaces to stop up in the bluff and eat a lunch. Bet this place is even more gorgeous in the summer.
  • I never get enough of this park. One of the last Great Places, you don't need my review to decide to come here. Im always proud to display my annual Wisconsin parking sticker because I'm more than happy to support the park Rangers and the people who keep the park clean and maintain the trails & habitats there. Each time I visit for a few nights I feel like my soul is refreshed
  • There is a great trail but not if you have young kids and are unfamiliar with it. We had several young kids with us including one in a stroller. The trail started off nice and peaceful but ended stressful and traumatizing. After many encounters with people along the trail, each of which directed us to the "best" path to get back to the parking lot, they assured us we were almost there. We had traveled 2+ hours along those trails and along the cliffs carrying a stroller up and down all the stone paths. I wish the signage was better along the trail. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.
  • Highly recommended for a multitude of things: easy hikes, hard hikes, kayaking, people watching, lounging on the beach, swimming, looking at fall colors, and enjoying Wisconsin's classic four season beauty! Admittance is cheap and parking plentiful. Easy 40 minute drive from Madison with some beautiful scenery along the way too. Incredible views from the west rim and the south east rock fall.
