Battery & White Point Gardens, Charleston

4.6
#4 of 17 in Parks in Charleston
Once a weapon-filled defensive site, Battery & White Point Gardens is now designed for peace and tranquility. As you walk through the pleasant park and gardens, you can examine cannons, statues, and other monuments, including a bronze bust of famous poet, novelist, and historian W.G. Simms. Look for the commemorative marker for a pirate captain and his crew who were hung at the site about 300 years ago. All your wandering will be in the shadow of many large antebellum houses, surrounded by oak trees and overlooking the Charleston Harbor. The gardens are suitable for picnicking, recreation, photography, and other leisurely activities. • The "Battery," as I have always called it, is right at the tip of the Charleston peninsula and is a relatively small area with ancient oak trees and civil war artifacts/memorials. This is a place that...  more »

  • Is a beautiful place to have a photo shooting. I when we my family and we have a bless. You can park for two hours we no charge and have a great time there. We took a couple of photo and walk around the beautiful park and historical place. Atmosphere is absolutely wonderful.
  • This is a nice park, but don't stop there. Walk up and down Murray street and enjoy the view on both sides of the street. On one side you have the water which is great, but look to the other side of the street and see the old large amazing houses just don't forget families live in these homes so look from the street to avoid invading their privacy. Thank you.
  • A beautiful park at The Battery. Plenty of shade under the live oaks provide a welcome respite from the heat. Perfect for a picnic or people watching. Great harbor views out to Ft. Sumter. Easy walk from the park up East Bay St. to Rainbow Row.
  • It is a very beautiful place. The trees and architecture of the surrounding homes are very relaxing. The gazebo in the center is over 100 years old but has been kept in such great shape. There are plaques commemorating the capture and execution of a famous pirate and his crew. As for the civil war monuments there, I know everyone has their own opinion on the subject. The statues themselves are beautiful and yes it is a part of our history as a nation. I think it would be a shame as it would take away from the beauty of the area. The only issue I have with it is if you see all of the historical landmarks from the Civil War you wouldn't know what the war was about or even who won. The tour guides there have to take classes and tests every year to teach people about the area. If you were telling the story of a Superbowl would you leave out who won the game?
  • White Point Gardens is located in Downtown Charleston right on the Battery off of Murray Boulevard. It is a beautiful location for a afternoon stroll or just to lie out under the trees and enjoy the Beautiful oak trees. There's a beautiful little gazebo that you may catch a summer wedding taking place while on your visit here to White Point Gardens. It's just a lovely place and it's free!
