Charleston City Market, Charleston

4.0
Established in the 1790s, Charleston City Market is one of the country's oldest public markets and hosts more than 300 entrepreneurs. Begin your visit at the historic market hall, an impressive Greek Revival-style structure built 1841. Admire its brownstone stucco and green ironwork before shopping for souvenirs and treats. Items with the Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal are entirely locally made. Market stalls extend four city blocks away from the hall and include an array of goods. You'll find about 50 artists with sweetgrass baskets, a traditional African-American craft. These tightly woven baskets have been made for centuries and are a popular--and useful--souvenir. • Love the market. For a good sampling of local art and offerings that saves a bit of time if not money. The first building is enclosed, has bathrooms, and is air conditioned. Other buildings are open air and reach back several blocks. There are several spots to stop and enjoy unique eats (I'm all fan-girl over hot little biscuits) , and if you walk back on the side you can see all the shops there as well. **Park in the parking garage!! The chances are slim that you'll get a space near. Expect to walk, but it's a fun walk with a little history all around!
  • Such an incredible place full of culture and good people! Many vendors selling their wares - such as art work, jewelry, foods, clothing and so much more. There is an older section and what seems to be a newer section, although I can't confirm this. The surrounding streets are excellent too...with many restaurant options and unique shops. One of the staples of the market wares is definitely the hand woven grass baskets. The sellers are also usually the crafts people so stop by and chat about the history of their craft and significance of their art.
  • Always a great go-to for me. I'm from the Northeast, live in Asheville now (5hour drive), and I'd move here in a heart beat if it weren't for my kids school. History, charm, scenic hide aways, shops, open markets, horse-tours for every muse, close to Ocean!!! And friendly, true Southern Grit! Love it here. People from her are prideful, and with great reason To be. If you've not been to Charleston, you must go! Super to go just off-season, but if you can bear the crowds at the beaches, it's fun anytime!
  • We spent at least 2 hours walking through this market area. It consists of several buildings, one right after the other. Each building has vendors down each side, with a wide aisle in the center. We saw several unique items - baskets, jewelry, children’s items, toys, food items, household items, and on and on. The items were very high quality, some a bit pricey. I would go back again. This is a fun place just to walk through and check out lots of local crafts and souvenirs. The vendors are very nice and most of them are up for a friendly chat. The only parking in the area is parallel parking street-side, but the meters also take credit cards, as well as coins. There was one paid parking lot nearby, but it was much more pricey. There are a few food and coffee stands along the way, if you're looking for a snack. Its usually hot in SC during the day, so we enjoyed a nice homemade lemonade from the market and walked around. It had its normal, market vendors. Nothing super special, but nice to look around. It was clean and we felt safe.
  • Lots of great historic real estate n things to see. Lots of restaurants both casual n formal. You will love the tours n flea market in center of town. So much to see n do. Several famous beach communities. This is a place you need to put on your must see towns. The people are friendly n the vibe is fabulous.
