Chatham Lighthouse, Chatham

4.3
One of the first structures of its kind on Cape Cod, Chatham Lighthouse today hosts a U.S. Coast Guard station and holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed originally in 1808, the lighthouse underwent several phases of modification in the following two centuries until being fully automated in 1982. Climb to the top of the lighthouse via the stairs and ladder for a view of the Atlantic. Because this is an active Coast Guard station and working facility, you'll need to check the online schedule to see when the building is open to the public. • Great historical lighthouse that you can climb on a tour. If you are into history, then you will really enjoy this. Not to mention, the views from the top of the lighthouse are incredible.  more »
  • The first night we arrived in Chatham, it was foggy. We went down to the lighthouse to see it in action. It was very cool! Highly recommend a night visit if you're in the area!  more »

  • Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Was one of my favorite places to visit!!! Absolutely beautiful here! Locals were great to talk to. Neat little shops to check out. Good seafood. You cam walk the beach and see the sea lions. Great family vacation spot.
  • This Chatham beach is worth visiting for a swim (close to the beach just to be safe) or a walk. You may encounter seals if you walk over to the sand bar on the right, or maybe even a shark that followed them there.
  • Great stop to combine with a visit to Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge (5 minutes away). I recommend visiting in the off-season though. It can be a zoo in peak season since there's limited parking and the roads are all two-lane and narrow. The lighthouse itself was not accessible but great photo opportunities abound. The new naturally re-sculpted harbor-to-ocean channel and beach offer boating and free swimming. There are numerous trails available in this area for walking. Chatham truly is a beautiful town!
  • Very nice place, clean, quiet, easy parking.
  • Beautiful and historic location. You can park right near the beach for free and enjoy looking down at the new (as of 2017) channel created by tidal forces and storms over the last winter as liesure craft are now able to pass. The location itself is beautiful just outside of Chatham center and along a pristine and calm beach that's fun for the whole family to explore.
