Raccoon Mountain Caverns, Chattanooga

#4 of 16 in Parks in Chattanooga
Go on an underground journey through Raccoon Mountain Caverns, one of Tennessee’s greatest natural wonders. Two types of tours are available. The Crystal Palace Tour is a guided walk through lighted pathways in the front area of the cave. The guide will explain the history of the cave as you admire the geological formations. For the more daring, the Wild Cave Expedition takes you deep inside the undeveloped portions of the cave--without trails, handrails, or electric lights. Trained guides will lead you through chambers, tunnels, streams, and waterfalls, and you'll have the option of staying overnight in the cave. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment, including helmets and lights. Wild Cave Expedition tours need to be booked in advance, but reservations are not necessary for the Crystal Palace option. The temperature inside the cave is consistently around 15 C (60 F), so make sure to dress appropriately. • Natural cave. 45 min tour, not a large area to tour but seeing it in it's natural state is an awesome experience. Cave animals, lots of formations to see and tour guide has lots of interesting informa...  more »

  • My 12 year old son and I did the 2 hour Canyon Crawl. Make sure to pack long sleeves and pants you don't mind getting muddy, because you will get muddy and that is half the fun! The caves are amazing....  more »

  • Very nice cave! Amazing to see all those stalagmites, stalactites, columns well preserved & explored. The cave is around 2.5 miles of explored path. Decent parking area, tickets could be purchased at the small gift shop at the entrance which is located on the left of the parking lot. Short walking tour about 30 mins, our guide was Justin he had his sense of humor, very good tour overall. He explained all about the cave, crawling tour, secret passages & also took family photos at the end of the tour. There are also RV camping sites & we did not camp, we just stopped for the cave tour & it was a great experience.
  • This was an unbelievable experience. We did the waterfall 3.5 hr tour and had Justin as our guide. The next time we do this it will be the longer gypsum tour because of how much fun we had! Our group was aged 45 to 8 years old and we all had a blast. This Tour had a lot of slippery climbing, slippery descending, belly crawling, tight squeezes, canyon traversing, mud crawls, 50 to 75 foot waterfalls. You get wet towards the final hour of the tour but at that point it’s not that bad because of how much mud and dirt you have covering you. Bring a spare of all articles of clothes and shoes. Not a bad idea to get some $20 muck boots with anti slip soles and ample lugs for traction if you don’t want wet feet. At the very least high top Water proof hiking boots will do well, you really want ankle support. In some areas the water depth was 8 inches. If you are a young or old explorer type mindset you will have a Blast! Elbow protection is a good idea. They give you helmets, lights and knee pads. If they have extra slide some on your elbows too. If you have issues with knees, elbows, back, neck etc take a less strenuous tour. If your 6 foot like me you are hunched over, on all fours, or belly crawling for 70% of the tour. It’s like an under ground playground and brought back memories from when I was a kid!
  • We had a party of 26 people eager to tour Raccoon Mountain Caverns. The ages ranged from 11 months to "older😆". We showed up at 3:30pm on our watches knowing the last tour was at 4:00pm. Unfortunately, we did not take in consideration the time zone changes 1 mile from the park. 😫 It was really 4:30pm. However, the staff was willing to take our group on the Crystal Walking Tour. He was so kind and didn't want our crew to leave disappointed. They set our large group up with 2 female tour guides to make sure the whole party could hear everything. It was our first experience in a cave with a lot of kids. We "all" had a blast!!! The cave was a wonderful experience. The staff were very friendly and informative. We will definitely plan to return.
  • Wonderful tour guides. Beautiful caverns. They offer hikes/excursions for all levels of physical ability. However, not wheelchair friendly. (Would not expect a cave to be anyways) Definitely worth checking out!
  • Our experience on the gypsum tour far exceeded our expectations. We felt like real cavers for the morning. It was a lot of crawling and climbing, and our tour guide Ashley knew exactly where she was going. Even though my bf and I had gone caving before, it was a very unique experience that felt wild and adventurous. Very much a once in a lifetime experience.
