#1 of 7 in Parks in Fredericksburg
Famous for its gigantic namesake rock formation, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area spans more than 647 hectares (1,600 acres) of desert. The pink granite dome rises nearly 130 m (425 ft) and covers 260 hectares (640 acres). According to archaeological evidence, human habitation in the area goes back more than 10,000 years. Explore the park's network of trails and admire the wealth of plant and animal species. An ascent of the dome will reward you with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Tribal legends and colonial history indicate the formation holds mystical powers--hence its name. If you're feeling adventurous, spend the day rock climbing, but check in at the headquarters first for route maps and climbing rules. • You can absolutely start hiking before the main office opens, and if you are going during the TX summer, highly recommend it. As long as the main gate is open, we arrived at 630AM and it was, you can ...  more »
  • It is quite a drive from town, but well worth the effort. The park staff is, well, minimal effort. They have no idea if the ponds have water or if there have been any animal sightings. They just took ...  more »
  • Enchanted Rock is a must do for any hiker or trail explorer. The hike to the summit did not take that long- maybe 25-30 mins with kids but was more strenuous than I was thinking it would be. Once at t...  more »

  • Probably one of my favorite National Parks in Texas, the wait time can be INTENSE, show up at 6:30-7:00 if you for sure want to get in. Showed up at 6:25 and was fifth in line. Made breakfast and coffee out the back hatch until they opened, right around 7:30. First come best views, you won’t run into as many people in the early morning as you would at 8:45-9:00, that’s when it really starts to pick up on the Summit Trail. Bring a fair amount of water, you’re definitely going to sweat a bit before the end of your hike up the Summit! They had some cool and cute souvenirs, but not a whole lot of T-shirts. They had a few different styles of long sleeves though! Hope you went to the bathroom before you came, there’s no restrooms currently near the parking lot, so you will have to walk a little to get to them! Happy trails y’all!
  • Really amazing site, particular rocks and landscape. Allows camping and BBQ, if you are interested. Good for families, there is a 6.25 miles loop with panoramic views, but you can also - at your own risk - leave the path and go climbing finding your own way. Nice and relaxing view from the top. This place has something mystical. Check I advance if you plan to visit it as the entrance is allowed this they get the maximum number of visitors allowed, then they close, so better getting there early! Clean toilets, and his security all around the area.
  • Great park - go during low peak times though! They reach capacity very often. We arrived in camp late Friday and had our pick of camps and made finding friends very easy. It filled up the following day. Great hiking and not just up to the summit!
  • Beautiful destination. My favorite Texas state park so far. The rocks and views are very impressive. Unique mini ecosystems up and down the rocks. Trails are well maintained. The trail to the top is short , but a little strenuous. Easy loop trail around the base.
  • Amazing hike to the summit. I’ve seen all skill levels do it. From young to old. Just make sure you are taking your time, take breaks, drink plenty of water and if you need help, have a spotter. This is not a difficult hike, but it is steep. The views at the top and the sense of accomplishment are worth it. Shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
