Grand Canyon North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park

4.8
#2 of 16 in Parks in Grand Canyon National Park
Part of one of the world's Seven Natural Wonders, Grand Canyon North Rim provides an inspiring and remarkable landscape without the massive crowds of the South Rim. Begin your trip at the visitor center, where you can pick up maps and brochures, talk to a ranger, and view exhibits about the canyon. One of the best ways to experience all that the North Rim has to offer is a hike through its wild and breathtaking scenery. If you'd rather not get that much exercise, cruise the scenic drive. Temperatures here are generally lower than the South Rim due to its greater elevation, so bring a sweater. North Rim guided mule treks are easier to book than South Rim mule trips, which generally must be booked 13 months in advance. • I didn't give the utmost evaluation as expecting a breathtaking total immersion in nature: it was only partly successful. Before accessing the panorama through the lobby of a small hotel run by native Americans, very warm and welcoming, there's a souvenir shop, a bar, an ice cream shop (and ice cream is great), then there's the Esplanade from which you have the first impact with the canyon. Gorgeous. You can walk more or less at the same level for almost one kilometer, there are terraces from which to photograph the immensity, then one can descend towards the Valley even though the journey is quite long, best done in the rump to donkeys who patiently there accompany down after about 9 hours. I expected different, that is totally immersed in the National Park without human settlements, or at least, not so obvious, it would have been better to build at a safe distance so as to offer an experience as natural as possible. Aside from that minor flaw, personal opinion, the visit is a must because the Grand Canyon is a world heritage site, unique and inimitable.

  • I thought the views from the North Rim were great but I was more impressed with the views from the South Rim. However, if you go down into the North Rim on the trails, the views are much better.  more »
  • Drove up from Phoenix via Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. A must do with anyone's first trip to Arizona.  more »
