Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Honolulu

4.4
#1 of 133 in Beaches in Hawaii
Famous for its sheltered inlet of calm and clear turquoise water, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve protects about 400 different species of fish and attracts amateur and professional snorkelers from around the world. The bay is also a nursery for green sea turtles, which you may see nesting as you walk or swim along the coastline. You can rent diving equipment if you don't bring your own and spend a day searching for parrotfish and coral. The preserve's regulations prohibit touching or walking on the coral heads, which often resemble large rocks on the ocean's floor. Keep in mind that touching or brushing up against coral or marine rocks may also result in serious wounds. • This is the beach stopped on the island in the USA only and it's beautiful beaches. It was a feel like no time was time visited, so a private beach. I thought if you happen to want to do snorkeling.

  • Come early to enjoy the views of the bay. Set your alarm and make sure you get there at early!!!! Keep in mind you don't have to swim right at 630am, just bundle up and nap on the beach. If you come l...  more »
  • We had a driver take us to Hanauma Bay and pick us up 5 hours later. It was a gorgeous quiet beach. You can hire snorkles at the beach which is worth doing! They have a small shuttle service driving y...  more »

  • Beautiful area!! You must know that you cannot go for free and you have to watch a video before heading to the beach. There is ride but you have to pay. Although you can easily walk down to the beach and then back up. Besides if you walk you get nice view points to take pictures. Nice area for scuba diving! Remember not to touch the wild life!
  • It is very beautiful here, on a sunny day the water is so clear. I didn't snorkel but you can hire equipment. The change rooms and toilets nearby are handy. You do have to pay to get into the beach which came as a suprise as I am Australian all beach access is free! But it forces you to watch a video before entry advising the importance of the reef and best practise. For tourists who don't know any better I suppose this is a good idea. I went on a weekend and the beach was packed, not sure if a weekday would be any better. Oh and there is mongoose everywhere so keep food packed away.
  • Perfect place to spend an afternoon. Shallow, clear, and clean water. The view of the bay itself is awesome. Kids loved it, and so did us adults. Even without the snorkeling gear, one could easily spot colorful fishes in the knee-deep water. Excellent place!
  • Great coral reef with plenty of big fish and other marine life. Very very busy during peak season. You will be able to find parking if you come before 8am or after 3pm. The beach closes around 5:15. If you park elsewhere it will be a long walk
  • Constructive criticism review If it wasn't for the $7.50, a totally full and tiny parking lot at 9:30am (we had to park at a nearby neighborhood), the safety/conservation video+the wait to see it, and the dying coral, then I would have given it 5 stars. Guess I should have consulted a constructive criticism review. They say that stepping on the coral is a contributor to killing the reef and that is a problem yes but he bigger problem is definitely all the toxic sunscreen that people wear right before they get into the water therefore adding chemicals to the reef. If they really wanted to update their video they could add on specific sunscreen to protect this place for years to come.
