Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West

4.8
#1 of 247 in Nature in Florida
Encompassing the most isolated and far-flung islands of the Florida Keys, Dry Tortugas National Park showcases vibrant coral reefs, tropical landscapes, and an island fortress. Set in the Gulf of Mexico nearly 109 km (68 mi) away from Key West, the park can be accessed only by sea. You climb aboard the official ferry service licensed by park authorities to reach the seven islands. Stop by the visitor center located inside Fort Jefferson, a 19th-century brick castle occupying the second-largest islet, for information on the park's history, oceanic ecology, and archaeology. Watch carefully for some of the park's nearly 300 species of birds, including nesting pelicans, terns, and frigatebirds. Put Dry Tortugas National Park into our Key West trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Wow- what an amazing trip via seaplane to the Dry Tortugas!! Our experienced pilot, Charlie, was awesome - he pointed out tons of things to see on the way. Take the all day flight option if possible- ...  more »
  • We came here via seaplane which was awesome. We had about 2 hours on the island which was enough time to tour the fort and get some snorkeling in.  more »

  • Great ride over and back on ferry. Food provided was simple but good. If you want to snorkel, take your own equipment due to provided masks leak. We had an excellent park tour guide tell us about the fort as we visited this huge place. I would recommend taking tour. Would love to camp there sometime. The night sky would be incredible but you need to bring ALL your own supplies.
  • One of the best experiences ever! Great place for travelers, backpackers, family, and all ready for an adventure! The boat ride on Yankee Freedom is a great 2 hour ride. It has everything you need provided for you from food and drink to all the help one could ask for! The crew is extremely nice as well. I would give the crew a 5 star. Once you arrive you realize you won’t want to leave this extremely beautiful place. Prices are all reasonable and definitely worth it. I’m already looking into going back because one trip is not enough!
  • Good place to visit once as it is very secluded. The fort was a lovely surprise as it is well tended by the park attendants. I came in on the morning flight and there were maybe 20 people on the island until the ferry arrived at 10:30. I got to snorkel on both sides and can recommend the north side for the corals and sea fans. The south side had clearer water with more wildlife to view. I can only rate this place 4 stars though since it costs $200 to $350 to get to this place and there is only the ferry or the plane option short of chartering a private boat here.
  • This is definitely a place everyone needs to visit. Absolutely beautiful fort preserved to allow you to step back in time. The Yankee Freedom ferry ride was very enjoyable and well worth the cost. Be sure to take the tour to learn the history. Enjoy snorkeling on the beach before you return to the boat. A very amazing experience!
  • Camped over night and really enjoyed the water, sun and other campers we met. The history is good the boat ride was well done and relaxing. Highly recommend a trip out.
