Loveland Pass, Keystone

Loveland Pass is a high mountain pass in the western United States, at an elevation of 11990ft above sea level in the Rocky Mountains of north-central Colorado.BackgroundIt is located on the Continental Divide in the Front Range west of Denver on U.S. Highway 6. The twisty road is considered to be especially treacherous during the winter months. A steep, steady 6.7% grade, along with numerous hairpin turns on either side, make it difficult to snowplow the road regularly.Loveland is the 5th highest mountain pass in Colorado that regularly stays open during a snowy winter season. When the Eisenhower Tunnel opened in March 1973, it allowed motorists on Interstate 70 to avoid crossing the pass directly. Trucks that cannot pass through the tunnel must still take US 6 across Loveland Pass, 800 vertical feet (244 m) above the tunnel. The same is true for bicyclists, pedestrians, and those drivers who wish to stop along the road to admire the scenery.Loveland Ski Area is located at the east side of the pass, and Arapahoe Basin is on the west side. The pass itself is a popular destination for backcountry skiers. Occasionally during the winter, the pass road may be closed by a blizzard and all traffic must use the tunnel, even the normally forbidden HAZMAT-carrying vehicles. In the event of less serious winter storms, chain restrictions are often imposed. At the Loveland Pass parking lot, visitors can access trails to the summits of Mount Sniktau and other nearby mountain peaks.

  • Good walk along the ridge. Relative fitness is needed as it is a little thin up there. But whole family managed it and enjoyed it. Great memories made here.  more »
  • We took this route and stopped and took a hike. We walked over a half mile up. It was a little challenging at times to adjust to the altitude but we just stopped to take a break when we got winded. De...  more »

  • Thee most stunning views and surrounded by top notch slopes on either side (Loveland and A-basin). Take it easy going up and down, storms and ice love to suddenly appear as well as avalanches. Usually better then the tunnels unless you catch them off peak hrs
  • Gotta try snowboarding and skiing here. Some small jumps and pole jams but great conditions well into the day. If you’re driving up to the top please pick up some snowboarders along the way! :)
  • Wanted to stop and look but no parking available. Could use Signs for parking on drive there. Pretty much almost missed the area off highway.
  • It is magical, but if you're a tourist and you haven't acclimated to the elevation, it can be a difficult to breath with little exertion. Bring water and a snack, and enjoy some of the best views in the area... Watch out for dancing bananas
  • Great ski area at very high altitude. Skiing is done at the continental divide and right above the Eisenhower Tunnel, great experience!
