Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles

3.9
Overlooking the Hollywood area of Los Angeles, Hollywood Sign is an icon of popular culture in the United States. You'll recognize this sign from its many appearances in movies set in and around Hollywood. Although it often denotes the excitement of the Golden Era of Hollywood, the sign actually stands on the spot where starlet Peg Entwistle died in 1932. To see the most famous view of the sign from below, look up from Hollywood Boulevard. Make your Los Angeles itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

  • Finally got to see it this time. Took pictures from a couple of different locations. Would highly recommend taking a tour.  more »
  • We've discovered Hollywood before landing at LAX, downtown district, turning from landing, so from the sky looking for LA landmark.

  • I recommend taking the Wisdom Tree Hike up then continuing across to get to the Hollywood Sign. It's a rocky path, so make sure to bring shoes with good grip for the hike. Workout clothes would be best for the vertical start to the hike which can heat up quick on a warm day (no shade). The parking is free and plentiful at the Wisdom Tree Trailhead as opposed to driving up near the main paved road to the sign (which is overcrowded). Plus it makes the views more rewarding!
  • The hike to the Hollywood sign was long (our route was approximately 5km one way) but easy walking. The scenery was nice (rolling Hollywood hills and a view of the city) and quiet. Weather was hot and dry. Was neat to see the sign up close and get some pictures.
  • In all honesty it mainly gets five stars because of its iconic status (as well as the stellar Los Angeles view). Hiking up here is a bucket list item for any native southern Californian (or at least should be) and whichever route you take is completely worth it. Plus every hike in this area is at least remotely challenging, so you can get up there and feel mad accomplished.
  • It's tough to review a legend, and the Hollywood sign is probably going to be the first legend you see when you visit LA. To be quite honest, for a legend, the sign is a wee bit boring up close and personal. There's a road, Mt. Lee Dr., which leads to this cell phone/ TV antenna type complex, and just below the the road, down the hill, is the sign. I got my photo shoot because we asked this California Dept. of Transportation dude down the road to open the gate for us. He had the key, and, apparently, I had the key to get him to unlock the gate. Bit of an adventure getting down the rocky hill hill and back up again in those platform boots, but we made it. When we were there, wasn't a soul in sight. Not sure about clambering around up there, or using Mt. Lee Dr. We did it, and it looks like lots of other folks have, too. So: if you like monuments, like the Sears Tower, or Old Faithful, the Hollywood sign might be right up your alley. Otherwise, there's a great view of LA from this spot.
  • I started my hiking from the observatory parking it cost is 4 buck for hour and if you are fast enough you need at least 3 hours. And you have almost 4 miles in ahead. You can walk above or under the sign but not that much close that you can touch that. From the above you have the best view of LA. Try to find a clear day for hiking then you can enjoy the view. The only thing that bothering me during the hiking was the horse’s poo on the road.
