4.5
#2 of 11 in Nature in Los Angeles
Runyon Canyon Park represents an urban wilderness with desertlike habitat within one of America's most bustling cities. The park features hiking and picnicking areas, including an off-leash dog park (unleashed dogs are also permitted on hiking trails). Since it's close to Hollywood, you may spot celebrities here. Be sure to bring water with you; there are no water sources along trails. Nearby parking can be a challenge to find. • This hike was terrific. It is not for anyone incapable of walking in unsteady turf although there is also a paved path for strollers and buggies. Be aware that numerous dogs are off leash and running;...  more »
  • Great hike to see the awesome scenery and views and you may just see a celebrity or two while you are hiking! Wear a hat and bring water. Great exercise and well worth the hike - it takes a minute tho...  more »
  • My friend and I decided to hike Runyon Canyon on Memorial Day. Parking was tricky, but at least the street sweepers weren't an issue (as they were last time we went on a Monday). The views are stunnin...  more »

  • Great entry level hike while you’re in LA. Nice views of the Hollywood sign & greater LA area. Most of the tracks through the park are reasonably easy for anyone with basic fitness. Take the paved road up if you’re looking for the easiest option. Dogs are allowed in the park. There’s limited street parking at most trailheads to get there early. If you drive around to the top there’s a dedicated car park
  • Great place to go hiking. I did not realize that there are two ways to get up to the top. One way is more rugged and difficult while the other is a paved road. Parking is a problem. You kind of have to hike in after finding a parking spot before you actually start the hike up to Runyon Canyon. It is very nice and you see a lot of people with dogs. I wouldn’t know a movie star if they stared me in the face but apparently, my friends tell me that there are tons of celebrities up there.
  • We had so much fun hiking here! The only thing I didn't like is that after a certain point, it's an off leash area for dogs so some owners weren't being very responsible about keeping their lies than friendly dogs leashed. If you have a mean dog, keep them leashed even if technically you don't have to. Also I wish the trails had signage to direct you. A couple of times we were unsure if which way to go.
  • Great paved hike option that beginners like me can handle! Beautiful cityscape views towards the top! Lots of dogs but fewer children than other hiking trails I've been on. Wish there were public restrooms nearby. Overall, a nice workout option for Hollywood residents and visitors alike!
  • What little of nature was in Runyon was made even less by the paving of the main trail. Serious error using asphalt, as it absorbs heat and Runyon is for dogs. I hope whoever made that decision is forced to walk barefoot on it in the summer. Stupid planning by our parks department. And, they planted a whole 8 trees during the renovation. Very generous for the most popular park in L.A. that has no shade on its trail. One plus - they put in a few water fountains. Fun to watch some walkers overly made up for exercise.
