Point Cabrillo Light Station, Mendocino

4.6
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Mendocino County
began operation in 1909 and, despite many threats to its preservation, continues to serve sailors today. The state historic park that houses the lighthouse boasts several historical buildings and wide Pacific Ocean views. You can access the light station buildings via two walks. The easier of the two starts at the south end of the parking lot and is paved. The dirt path located at the north end traverses grassland and coastal prairie. By the lighthouse, you can find three restored lightkeeper homes, one of which has been transformed into a period museum. Its artifacts and displays illustrate the lighthouse's history and provide a glimpse of local history. • It’s about a half mile walk to the lighthouse from the parking lot. You can either go the dirt trail or follow the paved road. They’ve done a wonderful job of restoring all the lighthouse keepers buildings and homes. You can actually rent out the lighthouse keepers house. Amazing views and we got to see several whales off the coast. Fun experience.
  • Easy walk from the parking area to beautiful views and the lighthouse. They have binoculars on site, which we used to see whales - lots spouting not too far off the coast in mid-January. There's a little interactive sea life exhibit - small but educational and fun, and also has a list of recently sited birds and sea life. Saw lots of people with dogs so clearly a good place for furry friends!
  • Amazing views, I would definitely suggest walking along the coast. The aquarium is small but charming. The lighthouse itself is very cool, and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The credit card reader is a bit slow at times, but it's not terrible.
  • Great place to visit and get some history on this particular lighthouse. The lighthouse is amazing as are the other structures on the property which include the head keeper and assistant keepers houses which I believe are available for rent. The view is spectacular and you might even get to see some whales
  • This place is so pretty. You walk down a scenic lane to the lighthouse; unless you are handicapped, then you can drive there. There are houses and vacation rentals that are kept in pristine condition. The views are spectacular. You can hear sea lions too.
