Corn Palace, Mitchell

3.1
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Mitchell
Russian/Moorish-styled Corn Palace, decorated with murals and designs from corn and other grains, features a new design every year. New murals are designed annually out of more than 275,000 ears of corn to cover the outside of the building. This tradition began in 1892, when town officials decided to showcase crops in an effort to get pioneers to realize the potential of the soil so they would settle in the area. Today, the palace is a multipurpose building, hosting numerous community events and exhibits. You can see pictures from the previous years' happenings. • There isn’t much here, but fun to see the new designs. Very “corny”. Worth a stop for a few pics at this classic road side attraction. Free parking available.  more »
  • Gun time here with my 14 year old and husband. It had been a long time since I’d visited before (1983) and still amazes me! Fun pictures and tasty caramel corn inside. We had a good time and it was fr...  more »

  • A must see if you are driving through. My kids enjoyed the children's area which is filled with educational interactive activities relating to corn and farming. They also got to take a picture with a mascot corn cob they saw walking around. My boy's liked the tractor they have inside. We snacked on popcorn balls which were good.
  • The world's only corn palace is THE place to go when traveling through South Dakota. The outside of the palace changes every year. The inside smells of popped corn and is decorated in corn memorabilia. Lots of places for photo opportunities and nearby gift shops and an ice cream place. Definitely worth the stop.
  • Do not miss this place! Well worth the stop. Very historical and historic, very gracious people, great photos, and it's free! However, if you are one who requires a screen in front of your face continually, you probably should skip.
  • Very unique place. The corn cob art work is beautiful and we'll done. This was our second visit and was even better than the first.
  • If you’re going to see one thing in Mitchell, SD, let it be the corn palace. A very cool slice of history that was totally worth the stop. It’s primarily used as a sporting/concert venue today, but it has some fun corn-themed exhibits inside and the exterior is very impressive. If you’re passing through Mitchell, stop here, take some photos and stop at the gift shop. There is 100% someone in your life who needs to receive a corn palace postcard.
