The Strand Bookstore is an independent bookstore located at 828 Broadway, at the corner of East 12th Street in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, two blocks south of Union Square. In addition to the main location, the store's Central Park kiosk is open on fair weather days at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 60th Street. The company's slogan is "18 Miles Of Books", as featured on its stickers, T-shirts, and other merchandise. In 2016, The New York Times called The Strand "the undisputed king of the city’s independent bookstores."History and descriptionThe Strand was opened by Benjamin Bass in 1927 on nearby Fourth Avenue, in what was known as "Book Row", which was established as early as 1890, and which had at the time 48 bookstores. Bass's son Fred took over the business in 1956 and soon moved the store to the present location at the corner of East 12th Street and Broadway. The Best place to purchase your books for a great price! Very helpful, kind and professional staff at all times. Always a deal for a fantastic price. You will leave the store satisfied. You can bet your bottom dollar you will return to buy another entertaining book to read!

Marvelous book store, late hours. You could spend hours there. I wish there were more places to sit down. You need that in a book store. A staff member was helpful looking for a book I needed. No luck. Strand didn't have it but I know Amazon and also Barnes and Noble do have it. I would have bought it from Strand if they'd had it.

Aside from the endless shelves of cool books you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere, the buttons, tee shirts, and misc. Items and games are hard to pass up. Definitely a store that isn't afraid to show its political views proudly. Enjoy the"tiny Trump hands" and "make America read again" buttons. Also enjoy the wide collection of feminist inspired garb "nevertheless she persisted" shirts, buttons, hats, etc.

This bookstore is amazing! For a reader like me to see this store, and walk around I was speechless! The bookshelves were tall and old fashioned, they were perfect! I recommend this store to everybody, and the prices are great as well. You van get a book for five dollars! Overall, this bookstore is a nice store to stop at in NYC!

I do love the Strand, but one caveat to University students: sell your books elsewhere. You will almost certainly get a better price. Also, the staff seem well aware that they are working at a NYC landmark and behave with an aloofness and self-importance that really isn't fitting their job. If you can avoid them while shopping, all the better.
