Trip Planner:   USA  /  Rhode Island  /  Newport  /  The Breakers

The Breakers, Newport

4.8
The Breakers was once the lavish summer home of the powerful Vanderbilt family. Today, the well-maintained property is a National Historic Landmark. You can wander through the two main floors and the kitchen wing of this 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style building. Admire the opulent furnishings and grand architecture designed by Richard Morris Hunt, one of America's most influential architects. Pick up an audio guide for more information about the mansion and the life of America's mega rich at the turn of the 20th century. Be sure to stroll through the grounds and take in the ocean views. • One of the most beautiful mansions ever! Take your time browsing with the headphones and just enjoy the view and the decor.  more »

  • If you're headed to Rhode Island or simply passing through, be sure to spin by Newport and get yourself a member's pass to visit the beautiful mansions! Definitely worth the money and time. Such amazing architecture and decor at its finest. The Breakers was my favorite of the mansions because of the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Fun fact, there's platinum decor hidden within the dining room walls (talk about excess!). Definitely take a stroll along the Cliff Walk if you have time.
  • Entering this property is a walk back in time. When the barons of this land exploited their wealth and displayed their status with these opulent displays of wealth. Every surface is covered with highest quality materials, marbles, exotic woods, paints, stained glass, ceiling murals and the list goes on. It is awesome to see and you can only imagine how people lived in this opulent environment. The staff was super helpful in answering questions, if the self guided tour didn't answer any questions you may have. This place is something everyone should experience and enjoy.
  • I really enjoyed visiting The Breakers! It was a beautiful historic home and I only wish I could have taken the additional tour to see other parts of the house. The audio tour is great and in the winter, you can take your time to see all the incredible details in the design and decor. Highly recommend a visit if you are interested in American History and design.
  • Big Secret: Even though it is not advertised, you can buy a ticket just to The Breakers instead of a multi-house combo ticket. A bit less expensive if you are just doing the Breakers and cliff walk. Also, I liked that you can take the tour at your own pace with the audio tour system.
  • This is one of the largest mansions in Newport. This mansion is very beautiful. There is big open space on back side of mansion which is good for taking great spans. You get great view of Atlantic ocean from the roof of the mansion.
