San Diego Zoo, San Diego

#1 of 18,070 in Outdoors in United States
Providing a home for 3,700 of some of the world's rarest animals, San Diego Zoo features pandas, gorillas, antelopes, orangutans, koalas, and much more. Noted for pioneering the concept of cage-free exhibits that recreate natural animal habitats, this zoo covers an area of almost 40 hectares (100 acres). Take guided tours on a bus, or hop on an overhead gondola to see the diverse habitats from the air. See different animals often found side by side in the wild, along with native plant life from places such as African rainforests and Arctic taigas. To view the collection of rare plants, visit the arboretum. Begin your visit at the visitor center, where you can pick up a free map. • We loved this Zoo! By far the best in the world. I am a huge fan of Zoos and this far exceeded my exceptions.  more »
  • We spent a full day here! Beautiful grounds and exhibits! Ticket prices were reasonable as were food prices. The bus tours were convenient and affordable. The sky ride provided a nice view of the park...  more »
  • This zoo exemplifies what zoos should be! A place where human beings are invited guests. Invited into a space designed for the creatures living there. It's a beautiful maintained space where the animals always come first. Very focused on education, this is a great place for all ages to enjoy. Lots of walking but they do have a number of transportation systems for those with accessibility issues. The food at the stalls and restaurants is well above average. Added plus, you are encouraged to bring your own water bottle and they will fill it for free at any of the food stalls. Environmentally conscious!
  • We are at the zoo very frequently due to having an active preschooler. We appreciate the playground and the buses, and mommy enjoys the new couches and umbrellas at the far end of the bridge. Nice place for a snack! We recommend getting the keeper club pass for a small family - as it allows access to all the buses and also lets you bring in grandma etc (1 free guest plus kid under 3 whenever you visit!) The summer is great because they have fun shows etc that you can keep busy with during that tough time between 5pm and bedtime. Pro tip - if you have a keeper club pass you can use the private entrance at the exit and skip the crowd!
  • Love love love this zoo. Great exhibits, so many animals. They have an awesome restaurant here that has a bar until 3:30. Hours vary, check website. Bathrooms are well maintained and there are refreshments and snacks everywhere you go. Kids play area is nice to get some energy out while you drink your zoo double margarita : p Season passes are worth it if you live near the area.
  • Tons of animals. Super fun. Make sure to take the aerial tram over the whole zoo... My husband and I took them and were able to see several exhibits we had not seen and did not even know existed. It was just the two of us, so it is fun for adults and children alike. Highly recommend.
  • Massive zoo, tons of animals too see. The earlier you get to the park the better! Reentry is allowed just be sure you have your tickets and get stamped on your way out. Snacks and souvenirs are not too expensive. Tip: Sky lift is a great way to get from one part of the park to the other and it's free. Wear comfy shoes! All staff I encountered very friendly and helpful!
