de Young Museum, San Francisco

4.4
Rebuilt after an earthquake, de Young Museum can resist seismic shaking with its striking twisted tower. This modern complex in Golden Gate Park holds collections of American and contemporary international art. Archives of American art dating back to the 17th century, including textiles and costumes, make the museum exceptional. Textiles come from as far away as Turkey, and the costumes showcase early fashions from designers such as Christian Dior. • Young's experience is worth as the exposure is there, but the architecture of the location and the view from the tower is unique. To visit only the tower and an excellent view of the city, it is not necessary to pay.

  • This is a special exhibit that ends within the next two weeks. Run, don't walk to see this exhibit. It is terrific, that is if you are interested in the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand and...  more »

  • The Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire exhibition was amazing. The place is well laid out and the buildings are really cool. Definitely check out the observatory tower. Pro tip : Pack light or check your bags in the basement level. You can't have a backpack on your back; you'll be required to carry it around your arms (below waist level is what they said).
  • Went here to see the exhibit on African American art from the south and it was very impressive. The staff was helpful, the cafe had some healthy food options for reasonable prices, the permanent exhibits are also very interesting, and even the architecture is cool. I felt a little over-scrutinized by the security staff at times, but I understand they are just doing their job. If you bring a backpack, be prepared to carry it around in your hands, you aren't allowed to have it on your back.
  • We love this place and we love coming here. Don't forget to climb the tower as it is completely free and offers one of the most unique views of San Francisco. If you have kids, you can climb the tower first and then head to the exhibits. We always enjoy the featured exhibit and have been several times. If you are a San Francisco, I really suggest getting a membership. If you are from out of town definitely put the DeYoung on the top of your list.
  • The day we came, was early in the morning and the museum wasn't open.  Of course the "typical" San Francisco weather, which is the fog, was upon us but burned off by early afternoon.  We have been to this particular museum in the past and have always enjoyed their displays, which changes periodically, as new artifacts or exhibits arrive into this part of the country. On one of our many visits here in the past, we got a chance to see the "Tutankhamen Exhibit," which was fascinating just to view the coffin and learn about its rich history. We walked the grounds and discovered the many plants all over this park and observed a strange plant, which had enormous leaves and started a discussion as to its origins.  But, to this day, we have never answered that question. There were also a few vendors in the center of the park selling their crafts.  This is a very nice park to take the family to.  Parking can get overwhelming at times so I would plan according if you come here and since this museum is next to the Japanese Tea Garden and across from The California Academy of Science, by noon, this place is pretty much inundated with vehicles trying to find parking spaces. 26 Nov 17; viewed the many art works from Mexico and African art. Art is truly in the eye of the holder as displayed in today's visit.
  • I thought this museum was great because it had a little bit of everything. The outdoor section was beautiful and the collections were diverse in background. The museum is definitely a lot bigger than it seems and i think it takes more than 2 hours to really enjoy the artwork. The only complaint that I have for this museum is that not all the tags have a description of the piece to tell you more about the background.
