Fort Funston National Park, San Francisco

4.7
#9 of 15 in Wildlife in San Francisco
Check one off your bucket list as you hang glide off the 61 m (200 ft) high bluffs of Fort Funston National Park. If that seems like a bit too much, explore the beach or take a relaxing walk, watching the adrenaline junkies glide above you. This is a dog-friendly beach, so feel free to bring your pet(s). The sea can be pretty rough here, se be mindful of riptides if you decide to swim. • We visited Ft Funston on a recent trip to SF. We used to take our daughter here years ago. It is better than ever. Easy parking. Porta Potties. Great views. Good walking trails. They allow dogs, and I...  more »

  • Beautiful park with many hiking trails , sand dunes, and never-ending beach. All off leash. Spectacular views of the city. There are too many dog walkers with a way top many dogs but it's more "casual" during the weekends and/Or @ sunset. One needs decent hiking shoes and water. There are only two water fountains and they are usually very crowded.
  • We LOVE this place. Great for kids to run around all over (as long as they're not by the cliffs), and paved so it's good for strollers. The beach is cool, but it's quite a trek back up the sandy hill. GORGEOUS views of the city and coast line. And LOTS of dogs! Great parking during weekdays!
  • Ft Funston is the most awesome place to bring your dog(s) and talk walks. It also has a historical value in that this is the location is where bunkers, to protect San Francisco, are locsted. Also, this is a launch point for hang gliders and it's fun to watch them take off and land.
  • Dog heaven! This is probably my most favorite place along the coast. Literally miles of beach for your dog to run free, most of it is people free too if you're willing to walk far enough. You can stay up top for great views and lots of dog socializing or trek down to the beach for fun in the surf. Never gets old other than seeing poop bags that aren't in the trash and kids tearing up the fragile eroding cliffs.
  • Parking always sucks, the dogs are cool here (for the most part), and the owners are all jackasses (for the most part). Be prepared to get sand in your shoes. If you don't, you're not doing it right. Pro tip: park on the street north of the entrance (at the first intersection). It's an easy hike up and will get you straight into the trails that lead to the beach and open areas.
