The Santa Monica Mountains is a coastal mountain range in Southern California, paralleling the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Transverse Ranges. Because of its proximity to densely populated regions, it is one of the most visited natural areas in California. Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is located in this mountain range.GeographyThe range extends approximately 40mi east-west from the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles to Point Mugu in Ventura County. The western mountains, separating the Conejo Valley from Malibu, suddenly end at Mugu Peak as the rugged, nearly impassible shoreline gives way to tidal lagoons and coastal sand dunes of the alluvial Oxnard Plain. The mountain range contributed to the isolation of this vast coastal plain before regular transportation routes reached western Ventura County. The eastern mountains form a barrier between the San Fernando Valley and the Los Angeles Basin, separating "the Valley" on the north and west-central Los Angeles on the south. The Santa Monica Mountains are parallel to Santa Susana Mountains, which are located directly north of the mountains across the San Fernando Valley.

  • This approximately 10 km long hiking trail leads from the parking lot at 12886 Buena road up to the sandstone peak, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains. The path is not hard, it has only a certain length and less than three hours you should not schedule. One is rewarded with a splendid panoramic view from the Summit at 1000 metres above sea level, which extends far beyond the Pacific. The vegetation is surprisingly green between the hilltops above, can be also found on hot days shade again and again. On the lower part of the path one comes first on the balanced rock and at split rock past, where also a shaded picnic area. I found flatly splendid the varied and surprisingly far away from everything, when you consider that it is right at LA. If you want to go hiking once only in LA and experience the natural beauty of the mountains, one is with this path rather little-visited but well-signposted ever anything but wrong.
