Edward Gorey House, Yarmouth Port

4.8
Learn about a famous illustrator and puppeteer at Edward Gorey House, a house museum dedicated to the life and work of this eccentric American artist. Gorey lived in the 200-year-old house for the last 14 years of his life; today, it features a collection of his sketches, etchings, and personal effects, plus a host of bizarre artifacts the author collected in the last years of his life. In keeping with Gorey's ardent support of animal welfare, the museum also houses a number of cats and frequently features animal-themed exhibits. Make a four-legged friend and enjoy the shade of the large, rare southern magnolia in the yard of this charming museum. • I had no idea who Edward Gorey was or what he did. What an interesting and talented man! I thought the fee was a bit high but in the end I was very glad I went. Take the guided tour for sure.  more »

  • Great collection of Gorey's life and literature. We visited during a children's day with free admission. They had a great scavenger hunt, and the volunteers were lovely. Some of the participants were quite rude, but I suppose that is just the general public. Will return to explore during a quieter day.
  • As a avid reader of Edward Gorey it was such a treat to finally visit his home; now turned into a museum. The home is filled with his illustrations and personal belongings, and has a gift shop. You can also walk through his garden. The house is located in a quaint town, but you can sense that Gorey loved his privacy. The town itself as a eerie feel to it, especially on a cold fall morning when the fog rolls in. The staff was very kind and friendly.
  • If you have any love of art or literature or cats it is a must see! The docent was excellent! Take the tour. The tree, you'll know, is just about to bloom! Next week it will be amazing!!
  • A Fantastic little house of oddities and art. The staff was pleasant, friendly and informative. There is so much to see you may need to come back a second time. When you go don't forget to find all the dead children. We got a prize for completing the scavenger hunt. Great visit at a great price! Highly recommend the trip out.
  • Very informative tour about a very interesting person. One of his relatives was the docent!
