West Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park

Located along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the smallest but most scenic geyser basins in Yellowstone National Park. Aside from geysers, the basin also features hot springs, pools, mud pots, and fumaroles (openings in the earth's crust that emit steam and gases). The most popular feature of this basin is Fishing Cone, found on the shore of the lake. This geyser was named for the fact that fishermen used to stand on the cone to fish, and then they'd parboil their catches in the vent of the geyser. Abyss Pool--with a depth of 16 m (53 ft)--is the deepest pool in Yellowstone; its dark green waters give the impression that it's bottomless. • Beautiful and spectacular photo-looking is a magical and is worth a visit to the natural landscape and then say it back at least 50 words of the comment on the word is really tired ah, well, that's it.

  • This is my favorite geyser basin in the park. It's proximity to the lake makes it extra scenic. Definitely take the time to walk around the boardwalks.  more »
  • The West Thumb Geyser Basin is quite an impressive site to visit...you will encounter it just a short distance into the Park if you come in from the south entrance. And it's right adjacent to Yellowst...  more »

  • This is one of our favorite places in Yellowstone. Boiling water at the very edge of the cool lake. The scenic views are breathtaking. Wonderfully colorful and peaceful pools. At sunset the sky here is magic and the ponds reflect the colors so you can see something very special.Such a mixture of beauty.
  • Short walk and lots of thermal activity - I would recommend visiting in the evening as the sunset makes the lake and pools light up with fantastic colors. Also great for viewing wildlife - had an elk and her baby literally cross the wood walkway 20 feet in front of me to feed in the middle of the geysers
  • Small area of thermal features. Not as impressive as other parts of the park, but a nice very short walk with a close-up view of some hot springs and geysers. The most interesting by far is Abyss Pool--very deep, with beautiful coloration. Good for children.
  • One of my favorite, the beautiful aqua green thermal pool, a background of navy blue lake with snow capped mountains in distance... pleasant walk
  • Top of the must visit in Yellowstone. This place has everything: boardwalk hike, geysers that fall into big lake, great stuff in the information center.
