Black Sand Beach, Isla de Vieques

#5 of 12 in Beaches in Isla de Vieques
Beach · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Examine the contrast of bright blue water against black sand at Black Sand Beach. This out-of-the-way spot takes a 10-minute trek through a rugged rainforest trail to reach the beach. Once on shore, look for streaks of black stretching among ordinary yellow sand. Eventually the black sand dominates the shoreline and sits in unique contrast to blue water and an orange beachfront covered in green plant life. Inland volcanic materials that wash down a stream during heavy rains form the unique color. • This is one of the things you have to see on Vieques. The sand is black, fine, and magnetic. Maybe not a beach where you want to sit and camp out for a day, but definitely worth the visit.  more »
  • Be aware of the 15 to 20 min walk through a wet path. All worth it.
  • Picturesque beach, calm waters for swimming, not a lot of people. The black sand is magnetic which was fun for the kids. The only downside is the hike down to the beach. It must have been rainy before our arrival because the hike was a 10-15 min walk in a small dirty stream littered with horse poo. If the hike had been dry (which I believe it is most of the time) it wouldn’t have been so bad. However, it was worth it to see this beautiful beach.
