South Dakota's second-largest city, Rapid City has for many years served as a gateway to the West.
Venture out of the city with trips to Keystone (Breezy Point Picnic Area, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, &more) and Custer (Needles Eye Tunnel, Sylvan Lake, &more). Pack the 15th (Tue) with family-friendly diversions at Rushmore Tramway Adventures. The adventure continues: look for all kinds of wild species at Bear Country USA, stop by Downtown Rapid City, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Reptile Gardens, and go deep underground at Big Thunder Gold Mine.

Traveling by car from Crazy Horse to Rapid City takes an hour. Expect somewhat warmer evenings in Rapid City when traveling from Crazy Horse in June, with lows around 57°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 15th (Tue) early enough to go by car to Badlands National Park.

Although Badlands National Park's name might not be the most inviting, its landscape of pinnacles, eroded buttes, spires, and an expansive, pristine mixed-grass prairie remain enticing.
When in Badlands National Park, make a side trip to see Hurley Butte Horseback Riding in Interior, approximately Interior away. Spend the 17th (Thu) exploring nature at Badlands National Park. And it doesn't end there: admire all the interesting features of Loop Road, take in the dramatic natural features at Yellow Mounds Overlook, explore the striking landscape of Homestead Overlook, and trek along Castle Trail.

Drive from Rapid City to Badlands National Park in an hour. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and taxi.
