Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
On the 23rd (Tue), trek along Animas River Trail, then look for all kinds of wild species at Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum, and then let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour. Here are some ideas for day two: trot along with a tour on horseback and then stroll through Purgatory Resort.

Drive from Mesa Verde National Park to Durango in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and bus; or do a combination of taxi and shuttle. In July, daily temperatures in Durango can reach 86°F, while at night they dip to 54°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Wed) so you can drive to Ouray.

Ouray is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Ouray County, Colorado, United States. Start off your visit on the 25th (Thu): steep yourself in history at Yankee Girl Mine, hike along Yankee Boy Basin, then admire the sheer force of Box Canyon Waterfall & Park, and finally admire all the interesting features of Ouray Box Canyon Waterfall.
