Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum and The Terraces at James Ranch. Appreciate the collections at Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and Toh-Atin Gallery. When in Durango, make a side trip to see Petroglyph Point Hike in Mesa Verde National Park, approximately 1h 20 min away. And it doesn't end there: take a tour by water with Boat Tours & Water Sports, take in the natural beauty of Trimble Hot Springs, and get engrossed in the history at Animas Museum.

Houston to Durango is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight, bus, and shuttle; or drive. The time zone difference when traveling from Houston to Durango is minus 1 hour. The town of Silverton is a Statutory Town that is the county seat of, and the only incorporated municipality in San Juan County, Colorado, United States. Start off your visit on the 10th (Tue): take in the dramatic scenery at Bear Creek Falls, appreciate the extensive heritage of Ouray County Museum, then explore and take pictures at Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour, and finally examine the collection at Ouray Alchemist Museum. Here are some ideas for day two: stroll through Perimeter Trail and then hike along Cascade Falls Park.
