With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Mon): stroll through Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary and then look for gifts at Santa Claus House. Here are some ideas for day two: stroll through Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, admire the natural beauty at Georgeson Botanical Garden, and then learn more about the world around you at University of Alaska Museum of the North.

The 2.43 million hectares (6 million acres) of Denali National Park include low taiga forest, high-alpine tundra, and snowcapped mountains, all of which lead up to Mt.
Visiting Denali and Denali State Park will get you outdoors. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Mt. Healy Overlook Trail and Helicopter Tours. Step out of Denali National Park and Preserve with an excursion to Byers Lake in Talkeetna--about 1h 25 min away. There's still lots to do: identify plant and animal life at Husky Homestead.
