Once the booming capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the tropical paradise of Lahaina still remains one of Maui's top vacation attractions, providing both culture and recreation.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Napili Beach and Ho'okipa Beach Park. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Wailea Beach and Kamaole Beach Park II. Explore Lahaina's surroundings by going to Kamaole Beach Park III (in Kihei) and Wailea (Makena Beach & Ulua Beach). There's more to do: hike along Kapalua Coastal Trail and kick back and relax at Kapalua Beach.

For traveler tips, photos, reviews, and tourist information, refer to the Lahaina trip planner.

Monroe to Lahaina is an approximately 13.5- hour combination of flight and car. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 4 hours traveling from Monroe to Lahaina. Traveling from Monroe in August, expect nights in Lahaina to be about the same, around 74°F, while days are a bit cooler, around 86°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Tue) to allow enough time to travel to Honolulu.

Honolulu, Oahu

In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Your inner history buff will appreciate USS Arizona Memorial and Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. US Army Museum of Hawaii and Bishop Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with a short trip to Lanikai Beach in Kailua (about 34 minutes away). There's still lots to do: trek along Diamond Head State Monument, explore the different monuments and memorials at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, see the interesting displays at USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, and get great views at Puu Ualakaa State Park.

Fly from Lahaina to Honolulu in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight. In September in Honolulu, expect temperatures between 88°F during the day and 76°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Volcano.

Volcano, Island of Hawaii

Those who named Volcano opted for simplicity in choosing a title, taking the nearby fire-spewing Kilauea as a source of inspiration.
Kick off your visit on the 6th (Sun): identify plant and animal life at Devastation Trail, tour the pleasant surroundings at Kilauea Iki Trailhead, then contemplate the geological forces at Kīlauea, then examine the collection at Jagger Museum, and finally hike along Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park) Trail.

To see other places to visit, more things to do, reviews, and tourist information, you can read our Volcano online trip planner.

Traveling by combination of flight and bus from Honolulu to Volcano takes 4.5 hours. Expect slightly colder evenings in Volcano when traveling from Honolulu in September, with lows around 71°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel back home.
