Juneau is an unusual state capital in many respects.

The City and Borough of Sitka, formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. Start off your visit on the 13th (Tue): see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour, then admire the landmark architecture of Russian Bishop's House, and then stroll through Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park. On the next day, take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Michael's Cathedral, then examine the collection at Sheldon Jackson Museum, then identify plant and animal life at Alaska Raptor Center, and finally indulge your thirst for a good beer at Baranof Island Brewing Company.

Traveling by flight from Juneau to Sitka takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In July, daytime highs in Sitka are 62°F, while nighttime lows are 54°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Wed) early enough to travel to Fairbanks.

With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.

Traveling by flight from Sitka to Fairbanks takes 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry and bus; or do a combination of ferry and bus. While traveling from Sitka, expect somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Fairbanks, ranging from highs of 72°F to lows of 54°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sun) so you can travel back home.
