The largest city on the Mississippi River, Memphis bills itself as both the "Birthplace of Rock" and "Home of the Blues." With such a rich musical heritage, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Elvis Presley chose to live in Memphis during his later years.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Wed): try your luck at Southland Park Gaming and Racing, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Memphis Zoo, and then get engrossed in the history at Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum. Keep things going the next day: try to win big at Gold Strike Casino, then examine the collection at Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and then take in a show at The Orpheum Theatre.

Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Start off your visit on the 21st (Fri): stroll through Hermann Park and then meet the residents at Houston Zoo. On the 22nd (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: admire the sheer force of Water Wall, admire the masterpieces at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and then explore and take pictures at Minute Maid Park.

Known for its Creole cuisine, rich musical tradition, and nearby swamps and plantations, New Orleans is one of the nation's oldest cities.
Get in touch with nature at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Audubon Zoo. Your inner history buff will appreciate Laura Plantation: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site and Garden District. Get out of town with these interesting New Orleans side-trips: Houmas House Plantation and Gardens (in Darrow), Whitney Plantation (in Wallace) and Lake End Park (in Morgan City). Spend the 25th (Tue) exploring nature at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.
