City of Roses

A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
On the 14th (Tue), look for gifts at Powell's City of Books, then don't miss a visit to Pittock Mansion, then see the interesting displays at Portland Art Museum, and finally trek along Oneonta Gorge. On the next day, identify plant and animal life at Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, take in nature's colorful creations at International Rose Test Garden, and then examine the collection at Oregon Maritime Museum.

A town that survives on the sea, Newport's population of just over 10,000 supports a healthy commercial fishing industry.
Visiting Nye Beach and Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area will get you outdoors. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Oregon Coast Glassworks and Yachats coastline. Get out of town with these interesting Newport side-trips: Yachats (Cape Perpetua Visitor Center - Siuslaw National Forest & Little Log Church) and Rock Your World: Pacific Northwest Gem & Jewelry Gallery (in Lincoln City). Astoria, named for famed fur trader John Jacob Astor, resides near the mouth of the Columbia River.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Flavel House Museum. Appreciate the collections at Heritage Museum and Columbia River Maritime Museum. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Astoria: Cape Disappointment State Park (in Ilwaco) and Haystack Rock (in Cannon Beach).
