For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
On the 1st (Wed), kick back and relax at Playa Punta Soldado Beach and then kick back and relax at Flamenco Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: enjoy the sand and surf at Zoni Beach, then step off the mainland to explore Culebrita Island, and then enjoy the sea views from Culebrita Lighthouse.

On the 3rd (Fri), brush up on your knowledge of spirits at Casa Bacardi, appreciate the extensive heritage of Sitio Histórico de San Juan, and then appreciate the extensive heritage of Old San Juan. Here are some ideas for day two: pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral Metropolitana Basilica de San Juan Bautista, then let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, and then skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour.
