Best known for its 1692 witch trials, Salem has a number of significant historical sites, a bustling downtown, and many witch-themed attractions.
On the 9th (Thu), contemplate the long history of Ropes Mansion, see the interesting displays at Salem Witch Museum, then contemplate the long history of Salem Maritime National Historic Site, then steep yourself in history at The Custom House, and finally steep yourself in history at The House of the Seven Gables. On the next day, steep yourself in history at Buckman Tavern, tour the pleasant surroundings at The Old Manse, pause for some serene contemplation at Grace Episcopal Church, then admire the landmark architecture of Phillips House, then take an in-depth tour of New England Pirate Museum, and finally have some family-friendly fun at Witch Pix.

Newark to Salem is an approximately 4-hour combination of flight and car. You can also drive. Traveling from Newark in July, things will get little chillier in Salem: highs are around 82°F and lows about 64°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to Portsmouth.
