Aptly nicknamed the "Mile-High City," Denver sits at an altitude of 1,600 m (5,280 ft) above sea level, located right where the Great Plains give way to the Rocky Mountains.
On the 15th (Sat), let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Lookout Mountain, then take in the dramatic natural features at Roxborough State Park, and then pause for some serene contemplation at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Birmingham to Denver is an approximately 5.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and flight; or drive. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Birmingham to Denver. Traveling from Birmingham in June, things will get little chillier in Denver: highs are around 83°F and lows about 55°F. Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Petroglyph Point Hike and Spruce Tree House. Visit Far View Sites and St. Columba Catholic Church for their historical value. Step out of Durango with an excursion to Million Dollar Highway in Silverton--about 30 minutes away. There's much more to do: hike along Animas River Trail, trot along with a tour on horseback, and take in the exciting artwork at Scenic Aperture Gallery.
