Originally built as a base for Vail Ski Resort, the town of Vail has blossomed into its own destination, but still has less than 6,000 permanent residents.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Vail Brewing Company. Get out of town with these interesting Vail side-trips: Main Street (in Breckenridge) and Idaho Springs (Argo Mill and Tunnel, River Rafting & Tubing, &more). There's still lots to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Vail Mountain Resort, explore the landscape on two wheels at Vail Recreation Path, fly down the slopes at Vail / Beaver Creek Resort, and trek along Booth Falls Trail.

Founded in 1859 as part of the Gold Rush in the Rockies, Breckenridge boasts a main street lined with colorful wooden storefronts housing cafes and shops, giving the effect of a thriving western town from the 19th century.
On the 12th (Tue), take a memorable drive along Boreas Pass Road, don't miss a visit to Main Street, then fly down the slopes at Blue River Sports, and finally indulge in some personalized pampering at some of the best spas. Getting from Vail to Breckenridge by car takes about an hour. Other options: do a combination of shuttle and bus; or take a bus. January in Breckenridge sees daily highs of 25°F and lows of 14°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Aspen.

Rocky Mountain High

Known as a ski resort town, Aspen's history goes back to its roots as a silver-mining village tucked away in an isolated valley of the Rocky Mountains.
Start off your visit on the 14th (Thu): take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Maroon Bells. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 15th (Fri): take a memorable drive along Independence Pass, trek along Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, and then walk around The John Denver Sanctuary.

You can drive from Breckenridge to Aspen in 2.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Traveling from Breckenridge in January, you will find days in Aspen are a bit warmer (34°F), and nights are a bit cooler (8°F). Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 16th (Sat) to allow time for the car ride back home.
