Founded in 1632 as a fortified settlement on the high ground between two rivers, Williamsburg served as a colonial capital of Virginia for over 80 years.
Colonial Williamsburg and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will appeal to museum buffs. Hollywood Cemetery and George Wythe House will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Williamsburg to go to Richmond and see White House of the Confederacy, which is approximately 1h 15 min away. There's lots more to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, take an in-depth tour of Colonial Williamsburg Wetherburn Tavern, contemplate the long history of Bassett Hall, and stop by Silver Hand Meadery.

Start off your visit on the 6th (Wed): learn about all things military at National Museum of the Marine Corps, brush up on your knowledge of spirits at KO Distilling, then witness the site of a historic battle at Manassas National Battlefield Park, and finally examine the collection at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. On your second day here, admire the striking features of George Washington's Mount Vernon, then get to know the fascinating history of Tomb of the Unknowns, and then explore the different monuments and memorials at Arlington National Cemetery.

Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is perhaps best known as the home of three of the United States' founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Frontier Culture Museum and Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. Get some cultural insight at James Madison's Montpelier and Veritas Vineyard & Winery. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Charlottesville: Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (in Appomattox) and Staunton (Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum & Trinity Episcopal Church). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at James Monroe's Highland, admire the natural beauty at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and admire the striking features of University of Virginia.
