The capital city of Virginia, Richmond has diverse architecture, a large collection of monuments, and world-class museums that reveal the city's important role in American history.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Hollywood Cemetery and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. White House of the Confederacy and Colonial Williamsburg will appeal to museum buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Richmond side-trips: Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park (in Fredericksburg), Bruton Parish Episcopal Church (in Williamsburg) and Petersburg National Battlefield Park (in Petersburg). Situated at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is perhaps best known as the home of three of the United States' founding fathers, including Thomas Jefferson.
Let the collections at Frontier Culture Museum and The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum capture your imagination. Visit James Madison's Montpelier and Lee Chapel and Museum for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Charlottesville: Brownsburg Museum (in Brownsburg), Appomattox (McLean House, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, & more) and Camera Heritage Museum (in Staunton). Getting from Richmond to Charlottesville by bus takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: drive. In July, daytime highs in Charlottesville are 88°F, while nighttime lows are 68°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Arlington.

Located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the county of Arlington blends big city and sprawling suburban environments.
On the 28th (Tue), take an in-depth tour of The Rising Sun Tavern, learn about all things military at National Museum of the Marine Corps, then examine the collection at Carlyle House, and finally stroll the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. Keep things going the next day: examine the collection at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, then witness the site of a historic battle at Manassas National Battlefield Park, and then get to know the fascinating history of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
