Sitka

The City and Borough of Sitka, formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. state of Alaska. Start off your visit on the 6th (Thu): step into the grandiose world of Baranof Castle State Historical Site, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St. Michael's Cathedral, then see the interesting displays at Sheldon Jackson Museum, and finally admire the striking features of Russian Bishop's House.

The Municipality and Borough of Skagway is a first-class borough in Alaska on the Alaska Panhandle. On the 7th (Fri), get a taste of the local shopping with BearHead Photography Gallery, get engrossed in the history at Skagway Museum and Archives, trek along Lower Dewey Lake Hiking Trail, don't miss a visit to Arctic Brotherhood Camp No. 1, then steep yourself in history at Moore Cabin, and finally look for gifts at Skagway Alaska Downtown. On your second day here, contemplate the long history of State Street and Broadway Street, then make a trip to Gold Rush Cemetery, then don't miss a visit to Lower Reid Falls, and finally hike along Yakutania Point.

You can fly from Sitka to Skagway in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In August in Skagway, expect temperatures between 65°F during the day and 53°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Sat) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Haines.

Haines

Sitting on the shores of Alaska's longest fjord and surrounded by mountains, the port city of Haines boasts spectacular scenery.
On the 9th (Sun), stroll through Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and then stroll through The Kroschel Wildlife Center. On the 10th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: see the interesting displays at American Bald Eagle Foundation, explore the world behind art at Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center, then sample the tasty concoctions at Haines Brewing Company, and finally examine the collection at Hammer Museum.

Traveling by ferry from Skagway to Haines takes 1.5 hours. In August, plan for daily highs up to 64°F, and evening lows to 52°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Mon) early enough to travel to Talkeetna.

Talkeetna

Expect a daytime high around 66°F in August, and nighttime lows around 49°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Tue) early enough to drive to Homer.

In August in Homer, expect temperatures between 63°F during the day and 51°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Wed) so you can drive to Anchorage.

Anchorage
