National Landmark red cliffs and the even more striking Pikes Peak mountain attracts tourism to Colorado Springs.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Penrose Heritage Museum and Climbing Tours. Appreciate the collections at Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center and Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. Explore Colorado Springs' surroundings by going to Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center (in Divide) and Canon City (Tunnel Drive & River Rafting & Tubing). Aptly nicknamed the "Mile-High City," Denver sits at an altitude of 1,600 m (5,280 ft) above sea level, located right where the Great Plains give way to the Rocky Mountains.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Fairmount Cemetery. Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum will appeal to museum buffs. Known as a ski resort town, Aspen's history goes back to its roots as a silver-mining village tucked away in an isolated valley of the Rocky Mountains.
On the 9th (Fri), trek along Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, then mingle with the ghosts of the past at Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum, and then let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour. On your second day here, shop like a local with Gene Taylor Sports, then explore the landscape on two wheels at Rio Grande Trail, and then explore the activities along Crater Lake Trail.

Traveling by flight from Denver to Aspen takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and car. In August, Aspen is slightly colder than Denver - with highs of 77°F and lows of 46°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
