Galveston

— 10 nights

The Oleander City

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Galveston is known for historic sites, parks, and theme parks. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: take in nature's colorful creations at Moody Gardens, visit East End Historic District, examine the collection at Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, and contemplate the long history of Moody Mansion.

To find photos, other places to visit, reviews, and tourist information, read our Galveston journey planner.

San Antonio to Galveston is an approximately 4-hour car ride. You can also do a combination of bus and taxi; or fly. Traveling from San Antonio in November, plan for a bit warmer nights in Galveston, with lows around 60°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) so you can drive back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
