Lihue, Kauai

— 3 nights
Lihue or Līhue is an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) and the county seat of Kauai County, Hawaii. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Na Pali Coast State Park and Shipwreck Beach. Relax by the water at Hanalei Beach and Tunnels Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Ke'e Beach (in Haena) and Hanalei (Wai`oli Hui`ia Church & Hanalei Valley Lookout). There's more to do: stroll through Hanalei Bay and see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

To see other places to visit, where to stay, ratings, and other tourist information, refer to the Lihue online journey planner.

New York City to Lihue is an approximately 15.5-hour flight. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, which is usually a -5 hour difference. Traveling from New York City in June, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Lihue, with lows around 73°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Sat) early enough to travel to Honolulu.

Honolulu, Oahu

— 7 nights

Big Pineapple

In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Lanikai Beach and Ala Moana Beach Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Koko Crater Railway Trail and Makapuu Lighthouse Trail. Explore Honolulu's surroundings by going to Sharks Cove (in Pupukea) and Haleiwa (Waimea Valley & Waimea Bay). And it doesn't end there: surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, stroll the grounds of USS Arizona Memorial, see the interesting displays at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and identify plant and animal life at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.

To see other places to visit, traveler tips, photos, and more tourist information, go to the Honolulu route maker.

You can fly from Lihue to Honolulu in 2.5 hours. In June, daytime highs in Honolulu are 86°F, while nighttime lows are 74°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.

The Aloha State
An archipelago of hundreds of volcanic islands located in a geological hot spot in the middle of Pacific, Hawaii offers diverse natural scenery and a warm tropical climate. The six major islands open to tourism draw visitors with their sun-drenched public beaches and craggy natural trails. Thanks to their mid-Pacific location, the islands boast a vibrant native culture influenced by both North America and Asia. You can spend your vacation basking in the modern comforts of the big hotels, but to experience the true spirit of these islands, remember that real Hawaiians live outdoors. Encounter nature by surfing, swimming, fishing, and picnicking, or join a guided tour across the ancient lava flows to the top of Hawaii's rugged volcanic peaks.
