Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kīlauea and Makalawena/Pu'u Ali'i. Shop till you drop at Big Island Bees and Kailua Candy Company. Get out of town with these interesting Kailua-Kona side-trips: Captain Cook (The Captain Cook Monument & Kealakekua Bay), Honaunau (Manini Kapahukapu Beach, Honaunau Bay, & more) and Devastation Trail (in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). There's much more to do: see Kona Boys, stroll through Kahaluu Beach, look for gifts at The Original Donkey Ball Store, and kick back and relax at Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay).
