Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Black Hills National Forest and Needles Eye Tunnel. Take a break from the city and head to Wind Cave National Park and Iron Mountain Road. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Custer: Presidential Trail (in Keystone), Mammoth Site of Hot Springs (in Hot Springs) and Elk Mountain Nature Trail (in Wind Cave National Park). There's much more to do: explore the activities along Sylvan Lake, learn about winemaking at Prairie Berry Winery, and explore and take pictures at Needles Highway.

Galena is the largest city in and the county seat of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, with a population of 3,429 at the 2010 census. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Blaum Bros. Distilling Co. and New Glarus Brewing Company. Step out of Galena to go to Rock Island and see Jumer's Casino Rock Island, which is approximately 1h 30 min away.
