A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Timberline Lodge and Ski Area and Columbia River Highway. Do some cultural sightseeing at Pittock Mansion and McLean House. Explore Portland's surroundings by going to St. Mary's Catholic Church (in Mount Angel) and Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (in McMinnville). There's still lots to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Eastbank Esplanade and snap pictures at Benson Bridge.

On the 13th (Tue), see the interesting displays at The Museum of Flight, then stroll around Mercer Slough Nature Park, then wander the streets of Pike Place Market, and finally admire the masterpieces at Chihuly Garden and Glass. Keep things going the next day: enjoy the sand and surf at Alki Beach, then get to know the fascinating history of Pioneer Square, and then enjoy breathtaking views from Space Needle.
